FAQs

What is the minimum age policy at McDonald's?

To ensure McDonald's restaurants provide a work environment that supports the academic commitments of young people, we apply a minimum age policy of 15 years.

What type of shifts are available?

McDonald's restaurants operate in a range of day-parts. These include:

  • Morning shifts (which can commence as early as 4am)
  • Daytime shifts (which cover our mid-morning, lunch and afternoon periods)
  • Evening shifts (which cover dinner and late evening times)
  • Overnight shifts (which help us serve our customers after 11pm through to mid-morning)

Our most experienced crew may assist with working evening and overnight shifts. In addition, McDonald's recommends that school students are not expected to work beyond 10pm on a school night.

While the majority of McDonald's restaurants in New Zealand operate 24 hours, 7 days a week, there are some restaurants whose hours may be restricted e.g. Food Court restaurants.

What if I don't have my own email address?

If you do not have your own personal email address you will need to source this prior to proceeding with your application.

If a family member also works at Macca's can I use their email address?

No, every applicant requires their own personal email address.

How will I be notified about my progress throughout the recruitment stages?

When you register, you will receive a metime ID number and password. You will be able to view the progress of your application by logging into the Careers Portal with this metime ID number and password and viewing My Applications. You will also receive email notifications to your personal email address.

What is metime?

metime is McDonald’s intranet. Our Careers Portal sits in metime. The metime ID number given to you during the application process will only work in the Careers Portal. If you are successful in your application you will be given an employee metime ID.

Can I save my application form half way through and complete at a later time.

Yes, you are able to save and return at a later date if you wish. Applications that have not been submitted will be deleted seven days after they were created.

How do I return to my application once I have exited?

You will need to return to apply.mcdonalds.co.nz and log in using your metime ID number and password. Keep these handy so you can go in at any stage to review the progress of your application.

What information do I need when completing my application form?

Make sure you have the following information at your fingertips: your contact details including your personal email address, right to work in New Zealand information if applicable, dates and details of any work history and contact details for at least two referees (one personal and one business or academic).

What does hours of availability mean?

These are the times you would be available to work. When thinking about the hours and days that you are able to work, take into consideration your other commitments such as school, sports and family. Please note that these shifts refer only to the times and days you would be free to work. This allows for greater flexibility when scheduling shifts. You may not be rostered for all hours you're available.

Can I print off my application form?

Yes.

What do I need to bring to my interview?

Bring any supporting documentation that will be required e.g. birth certificate, passport, visa, right to work permit, photo ID.

What do I wear to my interview?

Wear something clean and smart that you feel comfortable in. If applicable, it is okay to come in your school uniform. Ensure that you wear closed-toe, low-heeled, non-skid shoes as you may be asked to participate in a short (15 minute) on the job evaluation in a customer facing area of the restaurant.

How long is the interview?

The interview will take approximately 30 minutes.

What is an on the job evaluation?

There are two parts to our interview process. The first part consists of a 15 minute face-to-face interview and the second part consists of a 15 minute activity in a customer facing area of the restaurant. This activity may vary from restaurant to restaurant and could include meeting and greeting customers or giving them their orders. You will have an experienced crew person with you at all times.

Will I be paid to participate in an on the job evaluation?

No, this activity is part of the interview process and gives both the applicant and the restaurant management team the opportunity to find out if you are the right fit for each other.

Can I apply to more than one restaurant?

Yes you can apply to up to 10 restaurants. However, we do recommend that you think carefully where you wish to work before applying.

How long will it take for someone to contact me once I’ve submitted my application form?

We aim to contact you within 16 days of receiving your application but if you don’t hear from us, don’t panic. There may be a large number of applications so it’s taking awhile to review them all or there may not be any positions currently available that suit your profile. You will be sent an email as your application progresses to let you know what is happening with it.

What are the available and talent pools?

In the case that there are no positions currently available that suit your profile, your application will be put into our available pool for 45 days. This means the restaurants you selected can choose your application if a suitable position becomes available. You will be emailed to let you know your application is in the available pool.

If your application is moved to the talent pool this means one restaurant is really interested in your profile and is expecting a position to shortly become available. Once again, you’ll be emailed to let you know your application is in the talent pool.

If a suitable position does not become available after your application has been in the available or talent pool for 45 days, your application will be archived so you can apply to different restaurants if you’d like to.

If I'm not successful at the restaurant I applied to can I re-apply?

Yes, you can.

Does McDonald's promote from within?

Yes, there are no limits to how far or fast you can progress.

How old do I have to be to work in McDonald's?

15 years old

Why can't I log in?

Check that you have entered your metime ID number and password correctly. If you've forgotten your metime ID number or password, please go to the log in page of the Careers Portal and click on the forgotten metime ID number or password link.

What are the pay rates at McDonald's?

We ensure that our pay rates remain competitive. For more information please ask at your interview.

Can I apply if I am not a New Zealand citizen?

Yes, however you must prove that you are legally entitled to work in New Zealand by showing us your immigration right to work permit/visa.

What if I haven't heard anything from Macca's regarding my application?

You should receive a confirmation email acknowledging your application. If you have not received any communication from us within 48 hours, please check your emails, junk or spam folders. You can also check your application by logging into the Careers Portal with your metime ID number and password and viewing My Applications.

I'm trying to create a user profile and it says that a valid record already exists in the system?

If you have previously registered, log in with your metime ID number and password. If you have not previously registered, it appears an applicant has already used the same email address as you have entered. As a result, the system will not allow you to create a profile with this email address, therefore you will need to choose another email address.

I am encountering some technical difficulties and am unsure what to do.

If your browser is not supported by the Careers Portal, you may encounter problems when applying online. If you have anti-virus software, a firewall or other security software in place, this may cause some issues with the application. It is recommended that you temporarily disable the anti-virus or security software and test if the problem still occurs. The feasibility of this test may depend on your case, but this test is necessary to rule out or rule in such software interference as a possible cause. You may need to consult with your local IT or Network teams to perform such testing.

Is your online application secure?

Yes. It is secured to ensure all personal information is protected from unauthorised use. You will be asked to register using your personal email address and a password known only to you. Once you have registered you will receive a metime ID number and password which you can use to view the progress of your application via the Careers Portal. You will also receive email notifications to your personal email address regarding your application.
